You’re Not Undisciplined. You’re Just Misaligned
He blamed willpower—when the truth was his life was out of sync.
The Truth About Willpower
I used to think I was lazy. Weak. Undisciplined.
When I skipped the gym, I blamed myself.
When I procrastinated, I called it a character flaw.
When I couldn’t resist junk food, I told myself I just needed “more willpower.”
I bought into the same lie most of us do:
That success is just about trying harder.
But here’s the truth I didn’t want to admit:
It wasn’t a lack of willpower.
It was a life out of alignment.
Because when your environment works against you, no amount of “discipline” can save you.
Stack the Deck in Your Favor
Stop relying on grit. Start rigging the game.
Want to drink more water? Put a glass next to your bed.
Want to read more? Leave a book open on your pillow.
Want to write? Keep a draft open on your laptop.
When the cues are in sight, the habits follow.
Raise the Price of Failure
If you want to quit a bad habit, don’t fight harder. Make it costlier.
Delete the app. Move the junk food out of reach. Put your phone charger in another room.
The harder it is to fail, the easier it is to win.
Start Smaller Than Feels Legitimate
Most people fail because they try to start big.
The trick? Start so small it feels like cheating.
Floss one tooth.
Write five sentences.
Sit still for 30 seconds.
Tiny wins stack into momentum. And momentum is stronger than motivation.
The Real Secret
Discipline isn’t about who you are.
It’s about what surrounds you.
Your habits don’t live in your head. They live in your environment.
So this week, don’t ask: “How can I be more disciplined?”
Ask: “How can I make it harder to fail and easier to succeed?”
That’s how you break the cycle.
